        Desde al menos 1854, Edouard Clement ejerció como fotógrafo en el nº 4 de la rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth hasta que en 1867 se trasladó a la rue de Flandre nº 29 donde se asoció con Simon Gouault. Alternaba esta actividad con la de director del teatro de la Villette, motivo por el cual terminó abandonando su primer oficio.
